When are Speech Sounds Learned
by Erik K. Sander

Adapted from Sander JSHD 1972; Smit, et al JSHD 1990 and the Nebraska-Iowa Articulation Norms Project

“Most children master all speech sounds by the age of eight,
acquiring new sounds in a developmental sequence,

with the easier sounds learned before the more difficult ones.  The following are average age estimate of when consonant production occurs (Sander 1961, 62).”

       Sound = Age Range

     M = 1.5-3

     N = 1.5-3
     P = 1.5-3
     B = 1.5-4
    H = 1.5-3
   W = 1.5-3
D = 2-4
K = 2-4
G = 2-4
T = 2-6
    F = 2.5-4
L = 3-6
S = 3-8
    Y = 2.5-4
R = 3-6
V = 4-8
    Z = 3.5-8
J = 4-7

This is a general guide for when a child develops and then masters sounds.  This chart should only be used as a guide.  Please see our 'Sound Chart' for more detailed descriptions! Keep in mind that boys and girls can develop at different rates, so it's important to be aware of those possible differences.
